Zurich Insurance currently has an opportunity available for an experienced Manager Underwriting Marine in Benelux.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and driven individual who is eager to establish and expand the Marine business in the Belgian and Netherlands market in accordance with our Zurich Benelux growth plan. As Manager Underwriting Marine, you will be responsible for leading and managing a team of five individuals. This role will require a combination of strategic and operational expertise, as you will be responsible for developing and executing the overall strategy for Zurich's Marine business in Benelux, while also overseeing day-to-day operations and ensuring that all team members are performing to their fullest potential. Your ability to balance strategic vision with operational excellence will be key to your success in this role.

This is a fulltime hybrid role where you will be working from our office in Antwerpen, Belgium.


Key Accountabilities

As the Manager Underwriting Marine, your primary responsibility will be to establish and expand the commercial Marine business for Zurich in the Benelux region, aligning with our global strategy. Here is a detailed breakdown of your key responsibilities:


  • Relationship Development: Cultivate and nurture strong relationships with agents and brokers operating in the Marine sector. This will involve fostering partnerships to drive profitable growth, increase market share, achieve a desirable product mix, and enhance both new business acquisition and account retention.


  • Client Relationship Building: Build and maintain strong client relationships by understanding their needs, providing tailored solutions, and delivering exceptional service.


  • Growth Opportunities: Identify and capitalize on growth opportunities with key distributors, leveraging market insights and industry knowledge.


  • Risk Assessment and Underwriting: Ensure that accounts align with Zurich's risk appetite while also presenting sound business opportunities. Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and underwriting activities.


  • Cross-Selling: Promote cross-selling initiatives to increase product density within client accounts.


  • Sales Monitoring and Metrics: Monitor the sales funnel and production metrics of the team, ensuring targets are met and performance is optimized.


  • Market Analysis: Stay updated on market trends and coverage exposures that may impact business results. Collaborate with actuarial teams to establish appropriate rate and price structures.


  • Enhancing Customer Relations and Profitability: Continuously analyze the impact of branch office performance on other business units. Identify opportunities for improving customer relations, profitability, and productivity, taking into account factors such as new business, loss ratio, expense ratio, loss frequency, agency distribution, and product mix.


  • New Product Development: Contribute to the development and rollout of new Marine insurance products, aligning with market demands and customer needs.


  • Team Development: Provide guidance, coaching, and support to the team as the book of business grows, ensuring their professional development and success.


Requirements/ Profile


  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and a minimum of 10 years of experience in Marine underwriting and/or management.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in insurance, specifically in the Marine sector, along with strong commercial and analytical skills.
  • The ability to build strong and strategic relationships with colleagues at all levels, as well as clients and brokers.
  • Strong organizational and structuring skills, enabling you to involve all relevant stakeholders in the launch and ongoing development of the book of business.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Dutch. Proficiency in French is considered an additional benefit.
  • Adaptability to new systems and a good working knowledge of MS Office.
