Data Architect - (Part-Time, Job-Share and Full-Time)

Data Architect - (Part-Time, Job-Share and Full-Time)

Location: Whiteley, Fareham, UK (Hybrid working from the home contract)

We're the #1 best place to work in the insurance industry!

We're delighted to have been awarded a Glassdoor Employees' Choice award, recognising us in the top 20 UK's Best Places to Work in 2022 and the only UK insurer to make the list. The Employee's Choice award recognises employers that shine brightest according to those who know a company best - the employees.

The opportunity:

As an insurance company, Zurich understands that data is the biggest asset we have – and is critical to driving improved operational performance and feeding the strategic analytics insight we develop. Our previous CEO is widely quoted as saying ‘data is the new oil’ - and we have a Texas-sized data oil well just waiting to be tapped.

If you have a passion for data and an ability to translate business requirements into workable data solutions, standards and principles then we have a great opportunity to join our award-winning team as a Data Architect.

You’ll be responsible for helping set our strategic data direction, designing new data solutions and ensuring we spend our money doing the right things at the right time. We’re accountable for data from cradle to grave; this means everything from collaborating with systems designers to ensure the right data is captured in the front end, right the way through to warehousing it and making it available to end-users and other systems to consume, and ultimately driving the right customer outcomes.

You’ll join our Data Architecture and Analytics team (DAA), an industry award-winning team responsible for all our UK data needs - we’re connected to almost every part of our business. We’re not looking for the ivory tower, theoretical Data Architects. If you’re truly passionate about data, can think strategically whilst balancing a good level of pragmatism - and are prepared to challenge how things get done - then you could be a key part of our team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and support the Lead Data Architect and Head of Data in the delivery of the UK Data Strategy
  • Work to embed a data-led culture at the heart of our business
  • Facilitate and manage the provision of timely, accessible and trusted data which is seen by our customers as a genuine asset
  • Take ownership for the design and implementation of effective, robust data solutions; optimise existing data bottlenecks and model best practise for data across the organisation
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert – both as a technical go-to for the data delivery teams and also offering consultancy across the business
  • Oversee migration of data from legacy systems to new applications
  • Own the governance around data; metadata management, reference data management and other architectural artefacts - define and maintain the reference architecture surrounding the data estate
  • Analyse requirements for new data asks, and translate them into the technical design – with close consideration paid to data integration, transformation rules, ETL flow etc.
  • Design of conceptual, logical and physical data models, as well as maintenance of core repositories such as our data mappings and data dictionaries

This role is available part-time, job-share or full time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.

Your skills and experience:

  • You’ll have experience working with data (both the theory and practical application) – preferably as a data engineer, data scientist, data analyst, data architect, data modeller, or another similar role. However, this would suit someone looking to take a step up from a Developer or Business Analyst role.
  • You’ll have a solid understanding of data warehousing techniques as well as an in-depth understanding of database structure principles.
  • We deal with people right across the company at all levels, so having excellent communication skills and a passion for technology will be a plus. You’ll need to adapt your style to be able to present at the exec level and have detailed technical interaction with the development teams.
  • We look for people with an analytical and enquiring mind and the ability to think critically.
  • Ideally, you’ll have an appreciation of what’s involved in developing a data-target state and a roadmap to get there.
  • You’ll be comfortable ‘selling’ the data story to a wide range of business users at all levels across the organisation.
  • Previous experience with databases and data query languages such as T-SQL, PL/SQL or similar will be a given, but any familiarity with SQL Server, ETL tooling, Cloud data technologies such as Snowflake or Visualisation tools (Power BI, Qlik, Business Objects) would be a big benefit.
  • Whilst we’d love to find a data architect ‘unicorn’, we know they don’t exist. Ideally, you’ve been practical and hands-on in the past, and know what works and what doesn’t in a large organisation - but what’s important is your desire to immerse yourself in data and continually learn new things.

The reward:

As well as a competitive salary of between £55-£70k, we also offer an excellent lifestyle benefits package which includes –

  • 12% pension
  • 25 days holiday plus an additional 3 volunteering days
  • Annual company bonuses
  • Contribution to medical cover
  • Discounted technology offers
  • Virtual GP appointments
  • Discounted gym membership,
  • Free flu jab
  • Discounted gadget insurance
