Assistant Underwriting Manager (Engineering / Construction)

Job Summary

  • Support the Head of Engineering Lines & Construction on delivery of the planned profitability of Engineering Lines for HK Commercial Insurance (HK CI)
  • Assist in formulating and executing underwriting strategy of HK CI
  • Underwrite and analyze new and renewal business by utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting (TZW) framework, within the delegated authority levels
  • Develop and maintain relationships with customers, brokers and other business partners in support of business retention and acquisition
  • Develop and maintain relationship with key customers through superior service

 

Job Accountabilities

  • Apply TZW of Underwriting elements for new business & renewals; handling of assigned accounts and work within delegated authorities
  • Measure exposure and analyze risk
  • Determine technical price according to agreed pricing process
  • Quote and set coverage; Negotiate terms & conditions;
  • Contribute to development and execution of Zurich’s strategy
  • Build relationships in support of customer/ business acquisition and retention (e.g. by handling a range of queries; provide advice and to assist with the development of an account
  • Implement the agreed technical standards, controls, practices and procedures, thereby maintaining underwriting discipline
  • Timely update and use of sales and accounting systems
  • Contribute ideas and work for the development of new or enhanced propositions based on technical, customer and distributor insights

 

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or typically hold or working towards relevant professional qualification such as ACII
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years CAR, EAR, Machinery Breakdown underwriting experience in Hong Kong market
  • Practical market-facing underwriting experience
  • Solid brokers and clients servicing experience
  • Fluency in English and Cantonese; Mandarin and Cantonese speaking an added advantage
  • Knowledge in Engineering underwriting and structuring multinational insurance business in a compliance manners
  • Knowledge of major legal & regulatory construction issues in HK and to some extent in overseas markets are added advantage
  • Experience in servicing multinational / complex accounts with large/ key brokers
  • Negotiation, influencing and selling skills
  • Ability to develop relationships with key business partners
  • Meticulous in product underwriting and policy wording
  • Ability to build trust-based business relationships with customers and producers
  • Open mind to try new ways and alternative approaches of doing things
