Job Summary
As part of the Technical Underwriting management team, supports the Zurich Way of Underwriting. Consults with Functional Unit Leaders and Underwriting to enable achievement of Underwriting business plans. Carries profit and loss responsibility for a specific area of business responsibility. Operationalizes an underwriting business strategy through active engagement with internal and external stakeholders utilizing market and industry data to drive decision making. Implements risk appetite changes based on relevant internal and external data. Manages a team of Technical Underwriters working with Cross-functional resources to actively drive the implementation of Underwriting strategies (e.g., Pricing), propositions, and solutions (e.g., product development, underwriting tools and processes) for a portfolio, line of business or product line.
Job Accountabilities - Key Accountabilities
• Manages staff, providing appropriate training, coaching and development. Responsible for performance and talent management.
• Contributes to underwriting strategy relating to performance metrics, accumulations/CAT elements, data and insights.
• Adjusts underwriting strategy as necessary.
• Operates in established underwriting governance policies.
• Leads initiatives that have a high impact on the development of technical underwriting guidelines, and Best Practices, including controls and procedures.
• Leads various projects, aligning appropriate resources, setting project direction and engage work team with successful outcome.
• Provides expert technical underwriting guidance to Business Units Leaders and Underwriters in support of the achievement of business plans and proposition development, to find creative solutions.
• Handles complex queries and referrals within delegated authority.
• Assists with approval of terms and conditions and LOB-wide issues, enabling Underwriters to write profitable business.
• Takes a leading role in contributing to the development of business plans and pricing strategies and alignment of these with Business Unit Strategies.
• Responsible for key aspects of portfolio management, including analysis to monitor profitability and growth of specialty areas of business.
• Provides recommendations on aspects requiring change or remedial action.
• Monitors Technical Price accuracy and develops and implements solutions to enhance Technical Price.
• Drives continuous enhancements of pricing tools in adherence to Technical Price Certification requirements.
• Participates in Technical Underwriting Reviews, identifies trends, and contributes to the development of action plans and agreed upon action items.
• Participates in compliance-related queries, including state regulatory exams and insurance department inquiries.
• Acts as subject matter expert to develop underwriting technical training content.
Business Accountabilities
• Produce significant business opportunities with major customer / operating unit
• Develop strategic customer relationships
• Develop relationships with contacts with specialized expertise who can be called on for assistance and who will alert one to developing issues
• Identify opportunities and risks associated with changes in the external environment, looking forward 2 - 5 years
• Develop and implement annual budget for area of responsibility
• Improve SBU/SSUs customer relations with focus on profitability and productivity
• Recommends changes to policies, systems, products/ services to leaders
• Ensure that appropriate documentation, implementation and communication of established policy, procedures and operating standards is completed for area of responsibility.
• Regularly monitors and evaluates activities to identify potential risks and issues of non-compliance.
• Participates or may lead risk assessment for their area of responsibility and escalates potential issues to higher management.
Job Qualifications
• Bachelors Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Underwriting area
OR
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Underwriting area
Preferred:
• CPCU
• Advanced knowledge of line/s of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines
• Ability to multi-task
• Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills
• People management experience
