What is the opportunity?

We are currently looking for an experienced Legal Counsel for Zurich Cover-More (ZCM) North America.  Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Counsel position is responsible for the delivery of high-quality, timely, and cost-effective legal advice to the business.

This position is based in Schaumburg, IL; however, we welcome applications from remote candidates within the U.S. who have legal expertise in Accident & Health insurance.

What will you be doing?

  • Provide high-quality, timely, and cost-effective legal services to meet the strategic and operational needs of the business, coordinating with internal stakeholders across departments
  • Offer solutions-oriented commercial legal advice, primarily focused on regulatory reviews, handling complaints, reviewing and advising on marketing materials and contracts
  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of client and supplier contracts, ensuring alignment with business goals and legal requirements
  • Manage and support litigation matters for the business, including responding to complaints from regulators, and drafting legal responses and reviewing findings
  • Support the integration of new business units into the wider group, including any regulatory and governance matters that arise
  • Provide legal advice on US state regulations governing the sale and distribution of insurance products, with the flexibility to support Canadian work where necessary
  • Work within a lean legal team, supporting senior attorneys, and adapting quickly to shifting priorities and projects in a fast-paced, flexible environment, while maintaining a collaborative culture

What are we looking for?

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school, with active membership in a state Bar and eligibility to practice law in the U.S.
  • 5-7+ years of legal experience, with a mix of private practice (law firm) and in-house experience preferred
  • Deep expertise in U.S. insurance law, specifically within life, accident, and health (LA&H) insurance
  • Strong experience handling insurance regulatory complaints and direct engagement with state insurance regulators (e.g., NAIC, state insurance departments)
  • Proven ability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks, ensuring compliance while supporting business goals
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, business-focused legal advice to senior leaders
  • Experience managing legal aspects of corporate transactions, governance, and regulatory compliance in the insurance sector
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with legal research tools such as Lexis
  • Experience with Canadian legal system considered an asset
