The Opportunity:
The Head of Technical Underwriting is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the implementation of underwriting strategies and ensuring adherence to technical standards within the organization. The Head of Technical Underwriting is expected to bring a high level of expertise and leadership to the team, ensuring that technical underwriting practices are optimized and aligned with the organization's strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive implementation of strategies and risk appetite changes to develop standards, processes, and reports for Underwriting Quality Assurance locally and globally.
- Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure adherence to technical standards to deliver The Zurich Way and Underwriting Quality Assurance plans.
- Lead high-impact operational transformation initiatives by providing governance over Global Underwriting Policy, The Zurich Way, and Zurich Risk Policy adherence.
- Define assurance activities and develop technical underwriting guidelines and best practices to implement and monitor Product Underwriting improvement initiatives across all Business Units.
- Identify and address quality-related issues, including root causes and trends and provide expert support to underwriters
- Assist with the approval of terms and conditions and crossline of business issues and coordinate with other assurance providers regionally and globally.
- Make strategic recommendations and identify innovative opportunities and risks by participating in relevant committees and Global Underwriting work-streams and initiatives.
- Ensure successful implementation of key technical initiatives through executive consultation, research best practices and analyze rates, rating plans, and pricing strategies to support senior management.
- Lead and manage projects to develop and implement new or revised underwriting policies and procedures.
- Develop new products in response to changes in the external environment.
- Prepare and deliver high-quality, on-time written reports with recommendations for corrective action.
- To develop a simple business case for a defined project in the area to determine potential benefits, clarify the rationale for investment and support the planning process
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and minimum of 8-10 years of experience in underwriting, with at least 3-5 years in a managerial or leadership role.
- Experience in handling complex underwriting cases and providing expert support to underwriters.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the insurance industry, particularly within the APAC region.
- Understanding of regional market trends, regulatory requirements, and competitive landscape.
- Experience in managing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and a proven track record of successfully implementing strategies and risk appetite changes.
- Experience in leading and managing operational transformation initiatives and ability to define assurance activities and develop best practices.
- Experience in developing new products to innovate and create cost-effective proposals.
