Senior Surety Underwriter

We are expanding our Nordic business unit and seeking a Senior Surety Underwriter to launch and develop our Credit lines product offering in the region. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional to make a significant impact in a dynamic and growing market.

As a Senior Surety Underwriter, you will play a pivotal role in managing and developing Zurich Nordic Surety portfolio. You will oversee a network of MGAs ensuring they adhere to underwriting guidelines while supporting them with technical expertise. Additionally, you will directly underwrite Surety customers, assess risks, and define the Zurich Surety strategy for the Nordic region. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and the ability to build relationships across the industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and support MGA partners distributing Surety bonds on behalf of the insurer, ensuring compliance with underwriting standards.  
  • Underwrite Surety risks and make informed decisions on bond issuance.  
  • Develop and implement a Surety product strategy tailored to the Nordic market.  
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identify trends, and adjust underwriting guidelines accordingly.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including risk management, legal, and finance teams, to ensure alignment with corporate objectives.  
  • Foster strong relationships with brokers, clients, and partners to expand our market presence.  
  • Provide technical underwriting support and training to MGAs and internal teams.  

Stay informed about regulatory developments and industry best practices in the Surety space.  
 

Qualifications:

  • Several years of relevant working experience, preferably in a bank or surety insurer
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, equivalent to C2 level, are required
  • Proficiency in any of the Nordic languages is a plus.
  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree with emphasis in business, preferably finance or accounting
  • Technical expertise in surety underwriting. Strong knowledge of Surety bonds, financial risk assessment, and underwriting principles.
  • Ability to make independent risk decisions while adhering to underwriting guidelines. Familiarity with Nordic insurance regulations related to Surety products

  • Ability to develop and implement a Surety product strategy for the Nordic market.
  • Proven track record of building relationships with MGAs, brokers, and clients to expand market presence.
  • Ability to identify market opportunities and adjust underwriting guidelines accordingly.

  • Comfortable making underwriting decisions without direct oversight.  
  • Strong problem-solving skills to assess and mitigate risk effectively.  
  • High level of responsibility and ability to manage a Surety portfolio independently.

Relationship Management & Communication

  • Ability to negotiate and influence MGAs and brokers while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to represent the company in external industry relationships.
  • Clear and confident communicator who can explain underwriting decisions effectively.

Regulatory & Compliance Awareness

  • Understanding of local and international Surety regulations and legal frameworks.  
  • Ability to ensure compliance with underwriting standards and corporate policies.
