Canada Middle Market - Technical Underwriter, Casualty

Job Summary

 

As Zurich Canada Middle Market continues to expand, we are seeking a Technical Underwriter Casualty to support our growth nationally, working alongside a highly engaged, committed underwriting team.

 

As a Casualty Subject Matter Expert, the successful candidate will provide technical underwriting expertise and guidance to support the achievement of our business plan.  The successful candidate will partner with the business to implement and monitor strategic and tactical initiatives, supporting the growth of the portfolio with a focus on driving results to achieve key objectives (profitability, growth, rate, retention).  The successful individual will be responsible for implementation of underwriting strategy, including product, pricing and process to lead best practices across all industries, in all regions.

The successful candidate will demonstrate Casualty specific expertise, strong product knowledge and deep understanding of the needs and challenges of our mid-sized customers both domestic and non-domestic. A keen awareness of current market dynamics, as well as the legal environments of Canada and the USA is required; demonstrating experience dealing with complex issues related to US risk exposures.

Purpose of Role

 

As as Casualty Subject Matter Expert, this role will provide technical underwriting expertise and guidance to Middle Market, to support the achievement of our business plan.  The successful candidate will partner with Middle Market leaders and underwriters to implement and monitor strategic and tactical initiatives to drive the growth of the portfolio and results to achieve Caualty specific line of business objectives (profitability, growth, rate, retention).  The individual will be responsible for implementation of underwriting strategy, including product, pricing and process to drive best practices across all regions.

Job Qualifications

 

Required:
• Bachelors Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Underwriting area

OR
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Underwriting area


Preferred:
• CPCU
• Advanced knowledge of line/s of business and the legal and regulatory environment
• Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills

 

Job Accountabilities - Key Accountabilities

 

  • Provide specialist underwriting advice and guidance to Middle Market Leaders and Underwriters with objective of Middle Market growth plans and profitability 
  • Handle underwriting referrals for empowerment demonstrating Casualty expertise and current awareness of the US legal environment related to the complexity associated with US exposed risks and International exposures
  • Assist with approval of terms and conditions, enabling underwriters to write profitable business by providing well rounded solutions. Address specific technical queries from peers, brokers and internal customers with intention to deliver appropriate solutions, in line with the organization´s policies, processes and regulatory requirements.
  • Operationalize underwriting strategy through engagement with internal and external stakeholders utilizing market and industry data to drive decision making
  • Ensure successful implementation of key technical initiatives as identified to support the business needs
  • Actively review product development for market leading solutions; find creative solutions to support business
  • Initiate change with the intention of continuous improvement of value proposition and customer service
  • Ensure underwriting rules and frameworks are adhered to with communication to the business with timely updates, changes and learnings
  • Monitor risk appetite to implement risk appetite changes, as needed based on relevant internal and external data
  • Drive implementation of underwriting strategies, pricing, proposition and solutions (e.g. product development, underwriting tools and processes), with the support of cross functional resources
  • Identify internal and external trends, developments and develop remedial action plans to address in timely manner
  • Lead the development of Casualty underwriting guidelines and best underwriting practices for the business unit, including controls and procedures
  • Analyze detailed Casualty rates, rating methodologies, pricing strategies to support mid-sized risks for competitive offering, balanced with optimal outcomes for the organization
  • Review and/or prepare manuals based on accepted policies, procedures and governance tools, to ensure they are up-to-date 
  • Develop and deliver technical resources and training content, collaborating with appropriate resources and stakeholders, as required
  • Lead key aspects of portfolio management and monitor performance metrics, data and insights with the aim to improve portfolio results while supporting diversified growth 
  • Research primary data sources, identify internal and external trends and developments, analyze key themes and make recommendations to inform process, policy and/or product development.
  • Operate in established Zurich Risk Policy, Global Underwriting Policy and underwriting governance policies; operationalize the policies into guidelines and best practices. 
  • Communicate with Actuary to confirm accurate pricing models; while implementing solutions to continually enhance Model Price 
  • Participate in underwriting reviews (eg MPRs, Spot Checks, TURs) to identify trends and contribute to the development of action plans and agreed upon action items 
  • Participate in compliance-related queries, including regulatory reviews and insurance department inquiries, as required.
